Korean Ginsen has a very long history of use by humans in all areas of the world where it grows. One reason may be that the root of this ancient plant is thought to resemble the human form. Warriors and healers believed that it gave strength and power. Ginseng roots have appendages that resemble a human figure, hence the Mandarin name,Ren Shen, meaning “ROOT OF MAN”. Both Chinese philosophy and the Doctrine of Signatures states that because ginseng’s roots resemble the human form, and is thought to be one of our greatest allies, strengthening the entire structure *.
There are a variety of ginseng species. The main varieties are Panax ginseng
(Asian, Korean and Chinese Ginseng) and Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng). All ginseng prefers cool shaded conditions and are found in the wild on forest floors in shaded woodland areas. Due to over harvesting, American ginseng is listed by the E.P.A. The plant is deciduous and has 3 to 7 lobe shaped leaves supported by a single stem. The white tap roots of the Panax plant contain the much prized studied components. * In Chinese medicine, Ginseng is considered a chi and yang tonic *. This means it strengthens the energy of all the organ systems throughout the body*. Even its Latin name, Panax, is derived from the word panacea *.
Ginseng contains various pharmacological components, including a series of tetracyclic triterpenoid saponins (ginsenosides), polyacetylenes, polyphenolic compounds and acidic polysaccharides*.
